The walled old town of Korčula occupies a small peninsula projecting into the Pelješac Channel, its fishbone street pattern a deliberate medieval design to channel sea breezes while blocking harsh winds. Stone towers and gates punctuate the perimeter walls, and the cathedral of St. Mark stands at the town's highest point. The surrounding island is covered with vineyards producing the indigenous Pošip and Grk white wines.
