The Akamas Peninsula at the northwestern tip of Cyprus is the island's least developed coastline, a protected area of rugged hills, dense maquis scrub, and secluded beaches accessible mainly by four-wheel-drive tracks or boat. The Baths of Aphrodite, a shaded natural pool in a fig-tree grotto near the peninsula's base, are associated in Cypriot tradition with the goddess of love. The beaches of Lara Bay serve as nesting sites for loggerhead and green sea turtles, protected by a conservation station operating in season.
