On a small island at the storm-beaten southern edge of Haida Gwaii, the village of SGang Gwaay Llnagaay — Ninstints — preserves the remains of cedar longhouses and a unique group of carved mortuary and memorial poles slowly returning to the earth. Few places speak so directly of Haida art and of the people's bond with land and sea. UNESCO inscribed the village site in 1981 as a monument to a living culture and its oral traditions.
