Ithaca is a mountainous Ionian island traditionally identified with the home of Odysseus in Homer's epics, though the identification remains debated among scholars. The island has no airport and limited beach development, giving it a quieter character than neighbouring Kefalonia; its deeply indented coastline offers a series of small, remote bays accessible mainly by sea. The capital Vathy sits at the end of a long, narrow natural harbour, one of the largest in the Ionian.
