Tilos is a small Dodecanese island between Rhodes and Kos, largely free of mass tourism and notable for its status as a wildlife refuge where hunting has been prohibited since the 1990s. The island's Harkadio Cave yielded fossils of dwarf elephant species that survived in isolation on the island until approximately 4000 BCE. Medieval hilltop kastros, including the imposing Megalo Chorio castle, overlook a landscape of terraced hillsides and quiet bays.
