Kos is a Dodecanese island at the entrance to the Gulf of Gökova, directly opposite the Turkish coast, with a fertile flatland landscape contrasting with the elevated Dikeos massif. The Asklepion, a healing sanctuary and medical school dating to the fourth century BCE and connected to Hippocrates, sits on a hill terrace above the modern town with views to the coast. Kos Town itself contains extensive ancient remains integrated into the urban fabric, including a Roman agora, odeon, and colonnaded street visible as street-level ruins.
