Nisyros is a Dodecanese island whose entire landmass sits within an active volcanic caldera, making it geologically one of the most distinctive Greek islands. The Stefanos crater within the larger caldera can be descended on foot, bringing visitors within metres of steaming sulphurous fumaroles and hot grey mud. The whitewashed hillside village of Nikia at the caldera rim offers a striking contrast between the volcanic landscape below and the orderly Cycladic-influenced architecture above.
