Elafonisi is a small islet and beach at the southwestern corner of Crete, separated from the mainland by a shallow tidal channel that can be waded on foot. The beach is notable for the pink hue of its sand, which derives from crushed coral and shell fragments mixed with the white quartz. The shallow lagoon between the shore and the islet warms quickly in the sun and provides protected swimming conditions.
