At 604 metres in the Sibillini mountain foothills, Norcia is enclosed by a sixteenth-century papal wall and is the birthplace of Saint Benedict. The town is equally known throughout Italy as a centre of quality butchery—norcineria—producing cured pork products from locally raised Valnerina pigs. Significant earthquake damage sustained in 2016 has been followed by ongoing reconstruction that has reshaped parts of the historic centre.
