A small village at 1,452 metres on the edge of the Piano Grande plateau in the Sibillini Mountains National Park, Castelluccio is known for one of the most dramatic wildflower blooms in Europe—the Fiorita—which colours the surrounding high plain with poppies, lentil flowers, and cornflowers in late May and June. The unbroken plateau, ringed by the Sibillini peaks, is one of the few places in central Italy where the horizon is completely flat. The village was severely damaged in the 2016 earthquakes.
