Straddling the Marche-Umbria border, this national park encompasses the highest ridge of the central Apennines south of Gran Sasso, reaching 2,476 metres at Monte Vettore. The park includes the glacially carved Lago di Pilato—the only natural lake in the central Apennines above 1,900 metres—and the Piano Grande plateau. Long-distance trails cross the ridge, and the park is notable for wolf and golden eagle populations.
