Funchal

Funchal is the capital and main port of Madeira, built in an amphitheatre of hills descending to the southern coast and divided into neighbourhoods of distinct character from the historic Zona Velha to the contemporary marina district. The city is known for its flower market in the Mercado dos Lavradores, the hillside Monte neighbourhood reached by cable car, and the famous wicker basket toboggan descent from Monte toward the city. The mild subtropical climate supports botanical gardens of international standing including the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
