Castelo de Vide in the Alto Alentejo is a medieval fortified town set on a hillside of the Serra de São Mamede, its castle quarter containing one of the best-preserved medieval Jewish quarters (judiaria) in Portugal, complete with a 13th-century synagogue. The town is known for its remarkable concentration of historic fountains and lavadouros (public washing places) fed by natural springs. The whitewashed lanes of the old town are lined with flowering plants and potted herbs throughout the warmer months.
