Marvão is a fortified village perched at 865 metres on a granite outcrop of the Serra de São Mamede in the Alto Alentejo, near the Spanish border. Its intact medieval walls and castle occupy the very crest of the ridge, affording panoramic views across the Tagus valley plain and into Extremadura. The village interior is a serene collection of white-painted houses and lanes that see far fewer visitors than comparable sites on the Portuguese coast.
