The Upper Douro valley in northeastern Portugal is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of steeply terraced schist hillsides planted with vineyards descending to the river, producing the grapes used for Port wine and Douro DOC table wines. The terracing, built over centuries by hand, creates geometric patterns of extraordinary photographic interest, particularly in autumn when vine leaves turn gold. River cruises between Porto and Pinhão are the primary mode of touring the valley.
