Two millennia of vintages terrace the Douro's upper reaches. Smallholders have grown wine in the Alto Douro for some 2,000 years, and since the 18th century the region's port has carried its name around the globe. The result is a stepped landscape of vineyards, quintas and villages that records its own technological and social history in stone walls. UNESCO inscribed the wine region in 2001 — best absorbed slowly, glass in hand.
