Frank Gehry's titanium-clad museum on the Nervión River waterfront in Bilbao, opened in 1997, is widely regarded as one of the most important works of contemporary architecture. Its deconstructivist forms — curving metal sheets that shift colour with the light — catalysed Bilbao's urban regeneration and coined the term 'Bilbao Effect' in urban planning discourse. The permanent collection emphasises large-scale modern and contemporary art.
