The Dark Hedges is an avenue of intertwined beech trees lining the Bregagh Road near Armoy in County Antrim, planted by the Stuart family in the eighteenth century to form an impressive approach to their manor house. The arching canopy creates a cathedral-like tunnel effect that is especially dramatic in winter when bare branches are silhouetted against the sky. The road has attracted significant visitor numbers following its appearance in a widely distributed television production.
