Urquhart Castle stands on a promontory jutting into Loch Ness and represents one of the largest castle complexes in Scotland, with occupation evidence spanning from the early medieval period through to the seventeenth century. After being blown up to prevent Jacobite use in 1692, it was left to ruin. The remaining Grant Tower offers panoramic views north along the loch, and the setting makes it a popular subject for landscape photography.
