Loch Ness is a large, deep freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands, extending roughly 37 kilometres along the Great Glen fault line southwest of Inverness. Its peat-darkened waters rarely clear and have given rise to longstanding folklore surrounding a large unidentified creature. The ruined Urquhart Castle on the western shore provides one of the classic viewpoints over the loch and is among the most visited heritage sites in Scotland.
