A royal deer park north of Copenhagen preserved largely in its 17th-century form, covering about 11 square kilometres of old-growth oak forest and open heathland grazed by a herd of some 2,000 deer. Part of the UNESCO-listed par force hunting landscape of North Zealand, the park retains radiating allées of the baroque hunting ground within a landscape now popular for walking and cycling. The Hermitage Palace at its heart was used by Danish monarchs as a hunting lodge.
