A coastal town on the western coast of Norway, occupying a series of islands and peninsulas at the mouth of Storfjorden. Following a fire that destroyed most of the town in 1904, Ålesund was rebuilt almost entirely in the Art Nouveau style, giving the town centre a distinctive and cohesive architectural character unusual in Scandinavia. The Aksla hilltop viewpoint above the town provides a sweeping panorama across the archipelago.
