Gullfoss, meaning 'Golden Falls', is a two-tiered waterfall on the Hvítá River where the water cascades first across a wide upper ledge before plunging into a deep canyon. The surrounding area is often cloaked in spray that refracts sunlight into rainbows, and in winter the falls are partially encased in ice. It is the most visited waterfall in Iceland and a central stop on the Golden Circle route.
