The Geysir geothermal field in the Haukadalur valley contains the original geyser whose name entered most European languages. The field includes the active Strokkur, which erupts roughly every five to ten minutes to a height of 15–30 metres, and the dormant Great Geysir, which once reached over 70 metres. Colourful hot-spring pools and fumaroles dot the surrounding area, with the best light for photography in the low sun of morning or late evening.
