The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales

Slate from the mountains of Snowdonia roofed buildings across the 19th-century world. Between 1780 and 1914 quarries and mines re-carved this corner of northwest Wales from summit to sea, leaving terraced workings, inclines and railways, workers' villages and quarry-owners' mansions across the six areas of this serial site. The industry exported not just slate but machinery, methods and miners. UNESCO inscribed the landscape in 2021.
