Five thousand years ago, farmers on Orkney built with a sophistication that still startles: the immaculate stone village of Skara Brae, the great chambered tomb of Maes Howe, and the ceremonial circles of Stenness and Brodgar. Together with unexcavated neighbours these monuments compose a complete Neolithic landscape in Scotland's far northern isles. UNESCO inscribed the Heart of Neolithic Orkney in 1999.
