Archaeological Site of Carthage

From its founding on the Gulf of Tunis in the 9th century B.C., Carthage grew into a maritime power whose reach spanned much of the Mediterranean — until the Punic Wars ended with Rome erasing its rival in 146 B.C. The Romans later raised a second city upon the ruins, and the archaeological site now layers both civilizations one atop the other. UNESCO inscribed Carthage in 1979.
