The Williamsburg Bridge is a suspension bridge across the East River in New York City, linking the Lower East Side of Manhattan with the Williamsburg district of Brooklyn. Opened in 1903, it was for a time the longest suspension span in the world and, unlike its stone-towered neighbour to the south, it used steel towers, giving it a heavier industrial look. It carries subway trains, road traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge became closely tied to the immigrant history of the tenement districts at its Manhattan foot.
