Completed in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its opening, connecting lower Manhattan to Brooklyn across the East River. Its Gothic Revival limestone towers and web of diagonal steel cables constitute one of the most photographed engineering structures in North America. The pedestrian and cycling path along the bridge's center provides elevated views of the Manhattan skyline, the harbor, and the Statue of Liberty to the southwest.
