The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge over the East River in New York City, connecting Lower Manhattan with the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Downtown Brooklyn. Completed in 1909, it was an early demonstration of deflection theory in suspension design, carrying subway tracks, road lanes, a walkway and a bike path across its two decks. Its Manhattan approach is marked by a grand Beaux-Arts arch and colonnade near Canal Street. The bridge's towers famously frame a view down a Brooklyn street that has become a much-photographed vista.
