El Born, part of Barcelona's La Ribera district, is a medieval quarter that flourished as the city's trading and artisan hub in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its narrow lanes are named after the guilds that once worked them, and the towering Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar rises at its heart. The former Born market, now a cultural centre, preserves excavated streets from before the district was partly demolished for a citadel. Today it mixes design shops, tapas bars and small museums in an atmospheric setting.
