La Croix-Rousse is the historic silk-weavers' district rising on a hill above central Lyon. In the 19th century thousands of canuts worked Jacquard looms here, and the tall buildings had high ceilings to accommodate the machinery. The quarter is threaded with traboules, covered passageways cutting through blocks and courtyards, once used to move bolts of silk sheltered from rain. Steep stairways reward the climb with sweeping views over the city. Today it keeps a village-like, artisan atmosphere while preserving its industrial heritage.
