France's third-largest city, situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône, with a UNESCO-listed historic centre spanning the Renaissance Vieux-Lyon peninsula and the medieval Presqu'île. The Fourvière hill above the city holds a nineteenth-century basilica and two Roman theatres, and the panorama from its esplanade on clear days extends to Mont Blanc. Lyon is internationally recognised as a capital of French gastronomy, particularly through its network of neighbourhood bouchon restaurants.
