On the slopes of the Croix-Rousse hill lie the excavated remains of a Roman amphitheatre where delegates from across the Gallic provinces once gathered around a federal sanctuary. Dating to the early first century, the arena is remembered as the traditional site where early Christian martyrs of Lyon were put to death. Only the lower tiers and part of the arena floor survive, marked today by a memorial column. The quiet enclosed ruins offer a striking contrast to the busy neighbourhood above and below them.
