The national theatre of Catalonia occupies a monumental building near the Glòries square in Barcelona, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill and opened in 1997. Its most striking feature is a vast glass-walled portico framed by classical columns, evoking a Greek temple in modern materials. Inside, several stages present drama chiefly in the Catalan language, from classics to new work. As the flagship publicly funded theatre of the region, its bold neoclassical-modernist form makes it a landmark of the eastern part of the city.
