Lluís Domènech i Montaner, master of Catalan Art Nouveau, left Barcelona two very different gifts. The Palau de la Música Catalana is a concert hall of steel, stained glass and sculpted exuberance, flooded with daylight and the work of the era's finest craftsmen; the Hospital de Sant Pau applied equal daring to healing, its decorated pavilions designed around the wellbeing of patients. UNESCO inscribed the pair in 1997.
