The Shaheed Minar is a tall column on the Maidan in central Kolkata, erected in 1848 and originally named the Ochterlony Monument after a British military commander. Rising about 48 metres, it blends Egyptian, Syrian and Turkish influences, with a fluted shaft and a domed cupola at the top. After Indian independence it was rededicated to the martyrs of the freedom struggle, giving it its present name. Occasionally opened for climbs, it offers views over the vast green expanse of the Maidan and the surrounding buildings.
