The largest mosque in Kolkata, this red-sandstone structure in the crowded Chitpur area was completed in the 1920s and modelled partly on Mughal-era monuments. Twin minarets rise above a facade of arched gateways, and the prayer hall can hold thousands of worshippers. The surrounding lanes bustle with shops, eateries and bakeries famous during Ramadan. Its imposing dome and towers dominate the skyline of the old commercial quarter, and non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome to admire the architecture outside prayer times.
