The Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary is a small nature reserve in a residential suburb of Pretoria, named after a pioneering South African ornithologist. Centred on a couple of dams and surrounding grassland and woodland, it shelters a wide range of resident and migratory birds within the city. Trails and hides let visitors observe waterfowl, weavers and other species, and a restaurant overlooks the water. Managed as a protected patch of habitat amid the suburbs, it offers an accessible taste of local wildlife.
