The Parque de María Luisa is the principal green space of Seville, donated to the city in 1893 from the grounds of a former royal palace. Redesigned in a Moorish-influenced style for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, it is filled with tiled fountains, shaded arbours, ponds and pavilions among orange trees and palms. Ornamental glorietas honour Spanish writers and artists, and the grand Plaza de España sits on its edge. The lush planting offers welcome shade in the hot Andalusian summers.
