Largo do Toural is the principal square of Guimarães, the northern town regarded as the birthplace of Portugal, and lies at the edge of its UNESCO-listed historic centre. Once outside the medieval walls and used for cattle fairs, it is now an elegant paved space edged by ornate façades with iron balconies and framed by a low balustrade and fountain. Cafés spread terraces across the stone, and the square links the old town's granite lanes to the newer avenues, serving as a lively daily meeting point.
