This intimate medieval square lies at the heart of the historic centre of Guimarães, ringed by arcaded stone houses with overhanging upper storeys. On one side stands the collegiate church of Our Lady of the Olive Tree, and before it rises a curious Gothic canopy shrine commemorating a legendary victory over the Moors. The uneven granite paving, wrought-iron balconies and café terraces give the square a lived-in charm that helped earn the old town its place on the World Heritage list. It hosts festivals and markets.
