Piazza San Carlo is a stately baroque square in central Turin, laid out in the 17th century and lined by uniform arcaded façades that shelter historic cafés. The twin churches of Santa Cristina and San Carlo close its southern end with matching baroque fronts, and an equestrian statue of Duke Emmanuel Philibert rises at the centre. Long a fashionable promenade, the square remains a gathering place under its porticoes, where visitors sample the city's chocolate and vermouth traditions in cafés that date back many generations.
