This Renaissance cathedral near the Roman gate of Turin is the seat of the archbishop and the resting place of the celebrated shroud, a linen cloth bearing the faint image of a man that has drawn devotion and debate for centuries. The cloth itself is kept sealed and shown only on rare occasions, but a chapel and displays recount its history. The white marble facade and slender bell tower stand beside the ruins of a Roman theatre. Inside, the cool aisles and side chapels offer a quiet contrast to the bustle of the surrounding old town.
