The Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram is a major shrine to the goddess Kamakshi, a form of Parvati, counted among the most important centres of goddess worship in South India. Its golden-topped sanctum sits within a broad complex whose gateways and pillared halls reflect Chola and later Vijayanagara patronage. Unusually for the region, the goddess is enshrined seated in a meditative posture, and the temple is closely tied to an influential monastic tradition based in the town.
