Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram is one of the great Shaivite temples of Tamil Nadu, honouring Shiva as the element of earth among the five elemental lingams of South India. Its enormous rajagopuram, among the tallest in the state, rises above a walled complex expanded by Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara rulers. A revered mango tree in an inner courtyard, said to be many centuries old, is central to legends of the goddess worshipping Shiva. The thousand-pillared hall and vast tank make it a monumental example of Dravidian building.
