Bongwonsa, on the wooded slopes of Ansan hill in western Seoul, is the head temple of the Taego order and a centre for preserving Korean Buddhist ritual music and dance. Founded in the tenth century and relocated over the centuries, its halls display fine painted decoration and house numerous cultural artefacts. The temple is especially associated with the Yeongsanjae, an elaborate ceremony reenacting the Buddha's sermon on Vulture Peak recognised as intangible cultural heritage.
