The Muradiye Complex in Bursa was founded by Sultan Murad II in the 1420s and comprises a mosque, a madrasa, a soup kitchen and, most famously, a garden cemetery of royal tombs. Twelve richly decorated mausoleums shelter Ottoman princes and princesses, several lined with İznik tiles and painted decoration of exceptional quality. The complex offers a quiet, contemplative counterpoint to the busier mosques of the city. As one of the last great imperial foundations before the conquest of Constantinople, it is a key monument of Ottoman patronage.
