Holy Name Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Chicago, a Gothic Revival church consecrated in 1875, shortly after the great fire that devastated the city. Its tall spire and pale limestone facade rise on the edge of the fashionable Near North Side. The interior was extensively renovated in the twentieth century, with a soaring beamed ceiling, bronze doors and a large pipe organ. The cathedral has hosted major civic and religious ceremonies and bears bullet marks in its facade linked to Prohibition-era gang violence.
