The Legislative Palace that houses Peru's congress stands a few blocks from the Plaza Mayor in the historic centre of Lima. Begun in the early twentieth century and completed over several decades, its classical facade of columns and pediments overlooks the Plaza Bolívar with its equestrian statue of the liberator. Inside, a domed chamber and formal halls host the single-chamber legislature. The surrounding district holds older colonial buildings once used by earlier assemblies of the young republic.
